Global Demand For Plastic Additives Increased 5.7 Percent

According to Ceresana, global demand for plastic additives was about 33.3m tonnes in 2017 and 31.5m tonnes in 2016, up 5.7 per cent year-on-year. More than half of these plastic additives come from the asia-pacific region. North America and Western Europe lag far behind.

Because plastics are in most cases lighter and more practical, they are increasingly replacing other materials such as wood or metal. Therefore, the demand for plastic additives will continue to increase in the coming years.

Major consumer drivers: construction

Due to its advantages of being safer, more reliable, lighter and more economical, plastics have been applied more and more widely in various industries, especially in the construction industry: plastics have increasingly become the first choice for building insulation devices.

The materials required by the construction industry must meet multiple levels of standards, such as efficiency, quality, environmental protection and fire prevention. Therefore, the construction industry is the one that USES the most plastic additives in all the application fields in the world.

The second largest use of plastic additives is in the packaging industry. Plastic packaging is becoming more and more popular due to its portability, microwave heating and beautiful appearance. At the same time, using plastic packaging can also easily identify the packaging and can maintain product quality and flavor for a long time.

In addition, the automobile manufacturing industry and electronic appliances industry is also an important industry of plastic consumption.

Most commonly used for PVC

Since polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a brittle, hard white material, the type of plastic used the most worldwide additives to make it suitable for a variety of applications.

By far, PVC manufacturers are the biggest consumers of plasticizers, which make plastics softer, more flexible, smoother and more resilient. For example, plasticizers are used in cable and flooring materials.

The most commonly used are fillers

More than 50% of the world's plastic additives are fillers. Plasticizers and pigments were second and third. In 2017, more than 17.6 million tons of fillers were used in plastics.

In general, low-cost fillers increase the volume of the material mixture without changing its main properties. In addition, the production of high-fill plastics that meet the actual performance requirements of individual customers is on the rise: they contain up to 85% of the filler, have excellent mechanical properties, and in most cases are more cost-effective than traditional materials.
