Paraxylene Or From Shortage To Surplus

Although China still needs to import a large amount of p-xylene, with the gradual release of new capacity, the future p-xylene or face the situation of overcapacity, the competition is increasingly fierce.

Global demand is expected to exceed 50 million tons by 2022

In recent years, the world's production capacity for paraxylene has been growing steadily, with new capacity mainly coming from China, Vietnam, India, South Korea and other Asian regions and Saudi Arabia in the Middle East. In 2012, the world's production capacity of p-xylene was 37.694 million tons. By the end of October 2018, the global production capacity has increased to 52.333 million tons. Among them, China is the largest producer of paraxylene in the world at present. The production capacity of mainland China is 13.93 million tons/year, accounting for 26.62% of the world's total production capacity. Secondly, South Korea has a production capacity of 9.605 million tons per year, accounting for 18.35% of the total. India has a capacity of 4.881 million tons per year, accounting for 9.33% of the total.

In terms of consumption, global consumption of paraxylene rose from 33 million tons in 2012 to 41,313 million tons in 2017. Among them, China is currently the world's largest consumer of paraxylene, with the consumption of 23.84 million tons in 2017, accounting for 57.71% of the world's total consumption. India was next, with consumption of 400.4 million tonnes, or 9.69 per cent of total consumption. South Korea consumed 2.995 million tons, or 7.25% of the total.

China is the world's leading importer of paraxylene, with the mainland accounting for about 71.3 percent of the world's total imports in 2017 and Taiwan for about 6.7 percent. South Korea is the world's leading exporter, accounting for 36.7 percent of world exports in 2017. Japan was next, accounting for about 16 percent of exports.

It is estimated that the world demand for xylene will grow at an average annual rate of about 4% from 2017 to 2022, and the demand will reach 50.23 million tons by 2022.
